What customers say
★★★★★ 4.94 average · 913 reviews★★★★★“Loved the taste and thickness of powder as a shake. Will be adding it to my oats in the morning as well!”
★★★★☆“I am not really a fan of protein powder, but the texture was good. The Salted Caramel is ok. The Vanilla I mixed with Milo and it was quite nice. The chocolate sample I had was not to my liking. To be fair, I don’t usually like any of the chocolate protein powders.”
★★★★★“The chocolate is definitely my favourite as I don’t have a sweet tooth. I use the protein powder as a top up or a quick boost when I feel I need to hit my protein goals.”
★★★★★“Great tasting and quality [plant] protein.”

What is plant protein powder?
Plant protein powder is a supplement made by concentrating the protein from plants such as peas, faba beans, rice, soy or hemp. The plant is milled, then most of the starch and fibre is removed, leaving a protein-rich powder you can mix into shakes, oats and baking.
It's naturally free of dairy and lactose, which is why it's popular with people who are vegan, dairy-free or simply looking for an alternative to whey. For a wider look at plant proteins, including whole foods, see our plant protein guide.
Not all plant protein powders are the same
They differ in the protein source, how much the protein has been refined, what's been added for flavour and texture, and how much protein you actually get per serve. The next two sections help you compare.
Types of plant protein powder
You'll see these terms on labels. This table explains what they mean in practice.
| Type | What it is | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Single-source | One protein, such as pea, rice or soy | Simple, but a single source can be lower in one or more amino acids. See our pea protein guide. |
| Blend | Two or more plant proteins combined | Pairing legume and grain proteins gives a more balanced amino acid profile. Ours is pea, faba and rice. |
| Isolate | Refined further for a higher protein percentage | Less carbohydrate and fat. Often a more neutral taste. |
| Concentrate | Less refined, keeps more of the plant | Slightly lower protein per 100g. |
| Flavoured and unflavoured | With or without added flavour and sweetener | Flavoured is easier to drink on its own. Unflavoured suits cooking and smoothies. |

How to read a plant protein powder label
Compare brands using the nutrition panel and ingredient list, not the front of the pouch. Here is what to check and what you'll find on ours.
| What to check | Why it matters | Green Choice |
|---|---|---|
| Protein per 100g | Serve sizes differ, so per 100g is the fairest comparison | About 70g per 100g |
| Protein per serve | Shows what you actually get in a shake | 34.9g (Chocolate 35.3g) per 50g |
| Protein sources | A blend gives a more balanced amino acid profile | Pea, faba and rice |
| Gums and thickeners | Added for texture; some people prefer to avoid them | None |
| Sugar and sweeteners | Varies widely between brands | 2.2g to 4.8g sugar per serve, with cane sugar and stevia |
| Allergens | Check for pea, soy and cross-contact warnings | Contains pea. Made in a facility that also processes milk, soy, gluten and egg |
| Where it's made | Origin claims should be specific | Made in Victoria with at least 84% Australian ingredients |
| Price per serve | Tub size and serve size change the real cost | About $3.50 (from $3.33 in bundles) |
Six questions to ask before you buy
- What do I want it for? A post-workout shake, a breakfast boost or just topping up your daily protein all call for different serve sizes.
- Do I have allergies or sensitivities? Check for pea, soy and cross-contact warnings. If you're new to plant protein, start with a smaller serve. See how to introduce a new protein powder.
- Which flavour will I actually finish? Taste is personal. Our taste test compares our three flavours, and a sample pack costs $9.99.
- Is the price fair per serve? Divide the price by the number of serves. See how this works on our direct vs in-store comparison.
- Is the label specific? Look for named sources, protein per 100g and clear origin wording.
- Is it easy to use? Check how it mixes. Our mixing guide has tips for the smoothest shake.

Plant protein powder FAQs
What is the best plant protein powder?
It depends on your goals, taste and any allergies. Look for high protein per 100g, a blend of sources, a short ingredient list and clear origin labelling. Green Choice has about 70g protein per 100g, no gums or thickeners, and is made in Australia with at least 84% Australian ingredients.
Is plant based protein powder as good as whey?
For muscle building, research suggests plant protein is comparable to whey when total daily protein is matched. Whey is higher in leucine and usually smoother, while plant protein is dairy free and lactose free.
Is plant protein powder healthy?
It can be a convenient way to top up your protein alongside a balanced diet. Check the label for protein per 100g, added sugars and extras, and use it to supplement whole foods rather than replace them.
Is plant protein powder a complete protein?
Blends such as pea, faba and rice contain all nine essential amino acids. Single sources can be lower in one or more, which is why blends are popular.
Can plant protein powder cause bloating?
It depends on the person. Some people find legume-based proteins noticeable at first, especially in large serves. Start with a smaller serve and build up. Our stomach issues guide has more detail.
How much plant protein powder should I use?
One serve is 50g, which gives 34.9g of protein. How much you need depends on your total daily protein target, so check what you already get from food. A dietitian can help you set a target.
Does plant protein powder taste chalky?
Taste and texture vary by brand and by person. Our powders are formulated for a smooth shake, and the $9.99 sample pack lets you try all three flavours before buying a full pouch. See our chocolate guide for people who dislike chalky texture.
Is your plant protein powder gluten free and dairy free?
Yes, our powders are dairy free and gluten free. They contain pea and are made in a facility that also processes milk, soy, gluten and egg, so speak to your doctor if you have a severe allergy. See our gluten-free range.
How much does shipping cost?
Shipping is calculated at checkout based on your location, and orders over $150 ship free. Orders are usually dispatched via Australia Post within 1–3 business days. See our shipping policy.
Can I try it before buying a full pouch?
Yes. The 3-flavour sample pack costs $9.99 and includes Chocolate, Vanilla and Salted Caramel.
