Why pea protein

Why we use pea protein in our blend

Pea protein is one of the most widely used plant proteins, and for good reason. Here's how it fits into Green Choice protein powder.

A concentrated plant protein

Pea protein is made from dried peas and is a good source of protein. Our blend delivers about 70g of protein per 100g.

Blended, not on its own

Pea is naturally rich in lysine but lower in methionine. We pair it with faba and rice protein so the blend contains all nine essential amino acids.

A short ingredient list

No gums, thickeners or artificial colours and flavours. Every ingredient is listed further down this page.

Made in Australia

Manufactured in Victoria using at least 84% Australian ingredients, supporting local growers.

The basics

What is pea protein?

Pea protein is a plant protein made from dried peas, usually yellow peas. The peas are milled, then most of the starch and fibre is removed to leave a concentrated protein powder. It's naturally dairy free, lactose free and gluten free.

Pea protein isolate vs concentrate

An isolate is processed further, so it has a higher protein percentage and less carbohydrate and fat. A concentrate keeps more of the original pea, so it has a little less protein per 100g. Whichever type a brand uses, compare protein per 100g on the label rather than the headline claim.

Is pea protein a complete protein?

Pea protein contains all nine essential amino acids, but it's lower in methionine than some other proteins. That's why many plant powders, including ours, blend pea with another source such as rice. Containing all nine isn't the same as having the ideal amount of each for every goal, so total protein across your day still matters.

Compare

Pea protein vs other plant proteins and whey

No single protein is best for everyone. Here is how pea compares in general terms. Figures vary by brand, so always check the label.

Pea protein Rice protein Faba bean protein Whey protein
Source Dried peas Brown rice Faba (fava) beans Cow's milk
Amino acid profile All 9. Rich in lysine, lower in methionine All 9, but lower in lysine; higher in methionine A legume protein, used alongside pea in our blend All 9. Higher in leucine
Dairy and lactose None None None Contains dairy
Taste and texture Can be earthy on its own Can be gritty on its own Varies Usually smooth
Why blend it Pairing legume and grain proteins gives a more balanced amino acid profile than most single sources, which is the idea behind Green Choice's pea, faba and rice blend. Not blended

Good to know

Pea protein and digestion: what to expect

Most people tolerate pea protein well, but everyone's digestion is different. Some people find legume-based proteins more noticeable than others, especially when they first switch or take a large serve.

If you… What may help
Are new to plant protein Start with a smaller serve and build up. Our guide on introducing a new protein powder has practical tips.
Notice a pea or earthy taste Try a flavoured blend, mix with plant milk or blend into a smoothie. See why aftertaste happens.
Have a pea or legume allergy Avoid pea protein and speak to your doctor. Our powders contain pea, and are made in a facility that also handles milk, soy, gluten and egg.
Have a medical condition or a restricted-protein diet Check with your doctor or an accredited practising dietitian before adding a protein powder.

Buyer's guide

How to choose a protein powder with pea protein

  1. Check the order of ingredients. The first ingredient is the biggest. Look for the protein source first, not sugar or fillers.
  2. Look for a blend. Pea blended with rice or faba gives a more balanced amino acid profile than pea alone.
  3. Compare protein per 100g. Ours is about 70g per 100g, so you can compare with any brand regardless of serve size.
  4. Check for gums and thickeners. Some powders add them for texture. Ours doesn't.
  5. Look at where it's grown and made. We use at least 84% Australian ingredients and manufacture in Victoria.
  6. Try before you commit. Pea protein flavour varies a lot between brands. A sample pack costs $9.99, and our taste test can help you pick a flavour.

How to use

How to mix pea protein powder so it's smooth

Mix 50g (2 level scoops) with 300–350ml of water or plant milk, then shake or blend until smooth. A few tips:

  • Liquid first: add water or milk to the shaker before the powder to reduce clumps.
  • Shake well: 15 to 20 seconds, or use a blender for the smoothest result.
  • Rest it: leave the shake for a minute so the powder can fully hydrate.
  • Smoothies and oats: see our 7 smoothie recipes and mixing guide.

FAQ

Pea protein powder FAQs

Is pea protein good for building muscle?

Pea protein can support muscle building as part of a diet with enough total protein, and research suggests plant proteins are comparable to whey when total daily protein is matched. Whey is naturally higher in leucine, so people relying on plant protein may want to make sure they get enough protein across the day.

Is pea protein a complete protein?

Pea protein contains all nine essential amino acids but is lower in methionine. Blending it with rice or faba protein, as we do, gives a more balanced profile.

Does pea protein cause bloating?

It depends on the person. Some people find legume proteins harder to digest at first, especially in large serves. Starting with a smaller serve and building up can help. Our stomach issues guide has more detail.

Is your protein powder only pea protein?

No. It's a blend of pea, faba and rice protein. In Chocolate the blend is listed as Pea, Faba, Rice, and in Vanilla and Salted Caramel as Faba, Pea, Rice, in order of weight.

What is the difference between pea protein isolate and concentrate?

An isolate is processed further for a higher protein percentage. A concentrate keeps more of the original pea. Compare protein per 100g on the label to see the difference.

Is pea protein better than whey?

Neither is better for everyone. Whey is higher in leucine and usually smoother, while pea protein is dairy free and lactose free. The best choice depends on your diet, digestion and taste. See our vegan protein powder guide for a full comparison.

Is pea protein safe if I have a peanut or legume allergy?

Peas are legumes, and some people with legume allergies react to more than one. If you have a legume allergy, speak to your doctor before trying pea protein.

Is it gluten free and dairy free?

Our protein powders are dairy free and gluten free. They are made in a facility that also processes milk, soy, gluten and egg, so speak to your doctor if you have a severe allergy. See our gluten-free range and lactose-free range.

How much does shipping cost?

Shipping is calculated at checkout based on your location, and orders over $150 ship free. Orders are usually dispatched via Australia Post within 1–3 business days. See our shipping policy.

Can I try it before buying a full pouch?

Yes. The 3-flavour sample pack costs $9.99 and includes Chocolate, Vanilla and Salted Caramel.
