“The chocolate is definitely my favourite as I don’t have a sweet tooth. I use the protein powder as a top up or a quick boost when I feel I need to hit my protein goals.”

Steven Ralph · Chocolate 1kg
★★★★★

“Great tasting and quality [plant] protein.”

Teresa Hills · 3-Flavour Bundle
★★★★★

“Loved the taste and thickness of powder as a shake. Will be adding it to my oats in the morning as well!”

Anonymous · 3-Flavour Sample Pack
★★★★☆

“I am not really a fan of protein powder, but the texture was good. The Salted Caramel is ok. The Vanilla I mixed with Milo and it was quite nice. The chocolate sample I had was not to my liking. To be fair, I don’t usually like any of the chocolate protein powders.”

The basics

What is a complete protein?

Proteins are built from amino acids. Your body can make some, but nine are "essential" and must come from food: histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine.

A complete protein contains all nine in useful amounts. Animal foods usually do. Most plant foods contain all nine too, but one or two can be low, which is called the "limiting" amino acid. For example, legumes are typically lower in methionine, and grains are typically lower in lysine.

Complete isn't the same as optimal

Containing all nine doesn't tell you whether the amounts suit every goal. Protein quality also depends on digestibility, and total daily protein matters too. Scientists use scores such as DIAAS to compare protein quality.

How to combine

How to get all nine from plants

You don't need to eat complementary proteins at the same meal. A varied diet across the day covers it. Here is how different plant groups pair up.

Plant group Usually lower in Pairs well with Easy example
Legumes (peas, lentils, beans, chickpeas) Methionine Grains, nuts and seeds Lentil dahl with rice
Grains (rice, oats, wheat) Lysine Legumes Rice and beans
Nuts and seeds Lysine Legumes Hummus with tahini on wholegrain toast
Soy (tofu, tempeh, edamame) Generally a complete protein Anything Tofu stir-fry with vegetables
Quinoa and buckwheat Generally complete Anything Quinoa salad with chickpeas

Our blend

How Green Choice makes a complete plant protein

Our powder uses the same pairing idea, in one serve. Pea protein is rich in lysine and lower in methionine, while rice protein is higher in methionine and lower in lysine. Faba bean adds another legume protein. Together, the blend contains all nine essential amino acids.

  • Pea: rich in lysine
  • Rice: higher in methionine
  • Faba: an Australian-made legume protein

We don't currently publish a full amino acid breakdown for our powder, so we can't give you figures for individual amino acids such as leucine. Read more in our pea protein amino acid chart, is faba bean a complete protein? and why we chose faba bean.

FAQ

Complete plant protein FAQs

What is a complete plant protein?

A plant protein that contains all nine essential amino acids in useful amounts. Soy and quinoa are complete on their own, and blends such as pea, faba and rice combine sources to cover all nine.

Is pea protein a complete protein?

Pea protein contains all nine essential amino acids but is lower in methionine. Pairing it with rice or another source gives a more balanced profile.

Do I need to combine plant proteins at the same meal?

No. Eating a variety of plant proteins across the day is enough for most people.

Which plant proteins are complete on their own?

Soy (tofu, tempeh, edamame), quinoa and buckwheat are generally considered complete. Most other plant foods are lower in at least one amino acid.

Is your protein powder a complete protein?

Our blend of pea, faba and rice contains all nine essential amino acids. We don't currently publish a full amino acid breakdown.

Is a complete protein better for muscle?

Containing all nine matters, but so do the amounts, especially leucine, and your total daily protein. Whey is higher in leucine. Research suggests plant protein is comparable when total protein is matched.

Is it gluten free and dairy free?

Yes. It contains pea and is made in a facility that also processes milk, soy, gluten and egg, so speak to your doctor if you have a severe allergy.

How much does shipping cost?

Shipping is calculated at checkout based on your location, and orders over $150 ship free. Orders are usually dispatched via Australia Post within 1–3 business days. See our shipping policy.

Can I try it before buying a full pouch?

Yes. The 3-flavour sample pack costs $9.99 and includes Chocolate, Vanilla and Salted Caramel.
