“Loved the taste and thickness of powder as a shake. Will be adding it to my oats in the morning as well!”

★★★★☆

“I am not really a fan of protein powder, but the texture was good. The Salted Caramel is ok. The Vanilla I mixed with Milo and it was quite nice. The chocolate sample I had was not to my liking. To be fair, I don’t usually like any of the chocolate protein powders.”

Taste and texture

What makes pea protein taste and feel the way it does

Pea protein has a reputation for tasting earthy or feeling gritty. Several things influence that, and most are about the product and how you prepare it.

Factor How it affects taste and texture What to do
Protein type Isolates tend to be more neutral than concentrates. Pea alone can taste earthy. Look for blends and flavoured powders
Flavouring Cocoa, caramel and vanilla can mask earthy notes Try all three flavours with a sample pack
Liquid Water gives a lighter shake. Plant milk gives a creamier, richer taste. Test both
Mixing method Under-mixing leaves clumps and a gritty feel Shake longer or use a blender
Temperature Cold liquid is usually more refreshing, and some people notice flavour more when warm Chill your shaker or add ice
Resting time A short rest helps the powder hydrate fully Wait about a minute before drinking

How to mix

How to mix pea protein powder so it's smooth

  1. Liquid first. Add 300 to 350ml of water or plant milk to your shaker or blender before the powder.
  2. Add one serve. 50g is 2 level scoops. If you're new to pea protein, you can start with one scoop.
  3. Shake for 15 to 20 seconds, or blend for 10 to 15 seconds, until no clumps remain.
  4. Rest for a minute so the powder can fully hydrate, then give it a final shake.
  5. Adjust to taste. Add ice, a splash more liquid for a thinner shake, or half a banana for creaminess. See our mixing guide.

Try all three for $9.99, or go straight to a 1kg pouch.

Be clear

Pure pea protein or a blend?

Many pea protein powders contain only pea. Green Choice is a blend of pea, faba and rice. In Chocolate the protein blend is listed as Pea, Faba, Rice, and in Vanilla and Salted Caramel as Faba, Pea, Rice, in order of weight.

We chose a blend so the amino acid profile is more balanced than pea on its own. If you want a single-source pea protein, check the label of the product you're comparing.

Pea protein may not suit everyone. Some people find legume proteins more noticeable at first, and anyone with a pea or legume allergy should avoid it. See 15 pea protein questions Aussies ask and our pea protein guide.

FAQ

Best pea protein powder FAQs

What is the best pea protein powder in Australia?

It depends on your taste, goals and any allergies. Look for high protein per 100g, a short ingredient list, clear origin wording and a flavour you enjoy. A sample pack is the easiest way to test taste and texture.

Why does pea protein taste earthy?

Pea protein naturally has an earthy note, which is more noticeable in unflavoured or less refined products. Flavouring, blending with other proteins and mixing with plant milk or fruit can help.

How do I stop pea protein being gritty?

Add the liquid first, shake or blend for longer and let the shake rest for a minute. A blender usually gives the smoothest result.

Is pea protein better than whey?

Neither is better for everyone. Whey is higher in leucine and usually smoother, while pea protein is dairy free and lactose free. See our pea vs whey buyer's guide.

Is your protein powder only pea protein?

No. It's a blend of pea, faba and rice protein.

Can pea protein cause bloating?

It depends on the person. Some people find legume proteins noticeable at first, especially in large serves. Start with a smaller serve and build up. See how to introduce a new protein powder.

Is it gluten free and dairy free?

Yes. Our powders contain pea and are made in a facility that also processes milk, soy, gluten and egg, so speak to your doctor if you have a severe allergy. See our gluten-free range.

How much does shipping cost?

Shipping is calculated at checkout based on your location, and orders over $150 ship free. Orders are usually dispatched via Australia Post within 1–3 business days. See our shipping policy.

Can I try it before buying a full pouch?

Yes. The 3-flavour sample pack costs $9.99 and includes Chocolate, Vanilla and Salted Caramel.
